Taylor Swift made an unannounced cameo during Dakota Johnson’s opening monologue on “Saturday Night Live” on October 3, turning the actress’s hosting debut-night confessional about her dating life into a comedy sketch about their real-life friendship.

Johnson used her monologue to joke about dating musicians, quipping that she tends to leave their concerts with nothing but a tour T-shirt, and to poke fun at her own career, including the poor box-office showing of “Madame Web.” She told the crowd she has “really good friends” who never judge her romantic choices before introducing the punchline: “Ladies and gentlemen, my literal therapist.”

That was Swift’s cue to walk out to loud applause. She immediately pushed back on the title, telling Johnson, “I’m not your therapist, actually. You just show up once a week at my house with an empty bottle of wine and ask if I want some…” Swift went on to describe a familiar routine in which Johnson overshares on her couch while she offers little more than clipped responses, before Johnson cuts in with an exclamation of “Sleepover!” Swift closed the bit by joking that her contribution to the friendship amounts to “a Pedialyte and my security drives you home.” Johnson shot back, “Well, I have manners,” before suggesting the two have a sleepover that night, and later joked that dating musicians is a public service because it saves other women money on antidepressants.

The appearance was not entirely out of the blue. Swift had teased the possibility of showing up during a sketch at the Emmys, and the two stars have grown visibly closer in recent months. Johnson appeared in Swift’s music video for “Patient Zero,” and presented the singer with an Artist Director Honor at the MTV Video Music Awards after the video premiered. Swift reportedly returned the favor by the end of the episode, reappearing to surprise Johnson with a birthday cake as the broadcast wrapped.

The cameo quickly became the most talked-about moment of the night, with clips of the exchange circulating widely online within hours of the East Coast broadcast. For Swift, one of the most closely watched celebrities in the world, even a brief, unbilled comedy cameo is enough to dominate entertainment headlines, while for Johnson it offered a lighthearted answer to the tabloid chatter that has followed her recent relationships.

Neither star has commented further on the sketch beyond what aired, but the pairing is likely to keep fueling interest in both their friendship and any future collaborations, after a year that has already seen them team up on screen and share the stage at one of music’s biggest award shows.
