Rockstar Games has confirmed that Nigerian superstar Burna Boy will voice one of the in-game radio hosts in “Grand Theft Auto VI,” fronting a new Afrobeats and amapiano station called AfroBank FM alongside British DJ and producer Palms Trax. The announcement, made this week through Rockstar’s Newswire, gave the first detailed look at the soundtrack for one of gaming’s most anticipated releases, due out November 19 on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S.
AfroBank FM is one of six stations Rockstar unveiled, each built around real-world musicians voicing in-game DJ characters. Burna Boy appears as “Burna,” co-hosting with Palms Trax’s character “Palmsy,” on a station Rockstar says will span African music “from 20th-century classics to amapiano and 3-step.” The other confirmed stations include Cocoteo FM, a Latin station led by Bad Bunny and RaiNao; Back Country Radio, fronted by Morgan Wallen and Lana Del Rey; The Chamber 106.6, a metal station hosted by Slayer’s Tom Araya and Kerry King; Flash FM, a pop and electronic station with Robyn and model Alex Consani; and Dirty South Classics, a Miami hip-hop station hosted by Trina and Trick Daddy.
“AfroBank FM is special because it gives us a space to bring our sound, our energy, and our culture,” Burna Boy said, in comments reported by REVOLT and originally given to Hypebeast. “GTA has always understood that the music is part of the world, not just something playing in the background.”
Rockstar described the lineup as the “biggest and widest-ranging selection of in-game radio yet” for the series, and said the six announced stations are only part of a fuller roster that will also include classic rock and talk-radio formats closer to launch. The studio has also redesigned how players experience the game’s audio: for the first time in the franchise, radio and a new slate of on-demand podcasts — featuring protagonists Jason and Lucia — can be played on foot through in-game smartphones and headphones, not just inside vehicles.
The radio reveal follows Rockstar’s confirmation in September of an original soundtrack featuring songs from Travis Scott, Morgan Wallen and Keith Richards, with six singles already released, including tracks from Yung Lean and PinkPantheress. “GTA VI” arrives 13 years after “Grand Theft Auto V,” a game that went on to become one of the best-selling entertainment products of all time, and expectations for its sequel are correspondingly enormous across both the gaming and music industries.
For Afrobeats, Burna Boy’s role is another marker of the genre’s deepening reach into global entertainment far beyond the music charts. The Grammy-winning Nigerian artist has spent the past several years positioning himself as an ambassador for African music on international stages, and a speaking role inside a franchise with the cultural footprint of “GTA” puts Afrobeats and amapiano in front of an audience of hundreds of millions of players worldwide, many of whom will encounter the sound for the first time through AfroBank FM’s playlist.
Rockstar has not said whether it will reveal the remaining stations before launch day. With just over five weeks until release, anticipation for “GTA VI” — and now for what else AfroBank FM has in store — shows no sign of slowing down.
