WAEC Must Be Held Accountable for the Future of Our Children

WAEC appears to be playing games with the future of our children, but we must also look at the bigger problem: the limited number of universities and higher institutions across the country.

If 200,000 pupils sit the WASSCE and the country has fewer than eight universities, what do we expect? Assuming each university admits 2,000 students, eight universities would accommodate only 16,000 students, leaving approximately 184,000 without places in those universities.

This calculation does not include other colleges and institutions, but it clearly illustrates the scale of the challenge.
The question is: what happens to the thousands of young people who cannot secure admission into higher education? Are we adequately investing in universities, technical and vocational institutions, and other opportunities to help them build their futures?

There are also serious concerns about the reported practice of awarding a pass in Mathematics to commercial and science students who fail Mathematics, while awarding a pass in English to arts students who fail English. If this is indeed the policy being applied, WAEC must clearly explain the rationale behind it and how it affects the credibility of the examination results.
Our children deserve a fair, transparent and credible examination system.

We cannot continue to leave young people confused about their results and uncertain about their educational future.
The future of Sierra Leone depends on the education we provide today. Instead of allowing our children to suffer the consequences of a weak education system, the government and relevant educational authorities must invest in more higher institutions, improve educational standards and ensure that examination policies are transparent and fair.
Education should open doors for our children, not become another obstacle standing in the way of their dreams.
